Step 1. Process Discovery – the starting point:
Every important journey begins with thorough planning. In the context of HR, this means mapping and understanding all HR tasks. This process lays the foundation for a systematic approach to digital transformation and ensures that we do not overlook anything that could be important to the success of our journey.

Step 2. Mapping the process landscape – identifying pain points:
Mapping is a critical step in not only documenting current processes, but also uncovering pain points. This analysis provides us with valuable insights into where we need to focus in order to make processes more efficient and adaptable.
Step 3. Impact analysis – recognising the big picture:
A deep understanding of how each process impacts the business is critical. Here we assess how the lack of Talent Management (TM) is affecting the retention and development of talent and which processes should be prioritised to deliver the greatest benefits to the business.
Step 4. Digitalisation strategy – charting the course:
Developing a clear digitalisation strategy and roadmap is akin to navigating the open seas. It defines the direction in which we need to steer in order to achieve our goals and how we can realise the digital transformation of our HR processes step by step.
Step 5. Technology selection – setting sail:
Finally, we select and deploy the right HR software to navigate our HR processes into the future. The careful selection of technology is crucial as it will help us achieve our goal of efficiency and strategic integration.
Summary:
- Process Discovery is an umbrella term that encompasses the full range of activities involved in discovering and analysing business processes. It is an exploratory approach that aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of an organisation’s process landscape.
- Process mining is a specialised method within process discovery that focuses on the data-driven analysis and visualisation of processes based on digital traces in IT systems.
- In this sense, process mining is a sub-area or method of process discovery, not the other way round. Both concepts complement each other.
- For a definition of the other terms: process discovery, process mapping and process modelling, see the blog
